THE Christmas wish of a secret Stockton craftsperson has been granted with a happy ending.

This autumn, a beautiful embroidery was found hanging on the door of Stockton Town Hall asking whether Stockton will 'get a proper tree this Christmas?'

Last year only a cone-like structure, donated to the council by contractors refurbishing the High Street, was on display on the town's main shopping parade and was dubbed "Britain's worst tree" in the national press.

Now the mystery craftsperson has left another piece of colourful needlework to wish a Merry Christmas and say “thank you” for making their festive wish come true.

The note follows the end of the Stockton Sparkles winter festival which saw the appearance of a range of festive decorations in Stockton Town Centre including a spectacular 50ft Christmas tree, an extra-large illuminated reindeer on top of the Shambles Market Hall, a huge ‘Stockton Sparkles’ bauble and a giant Christmas present, all which can still be seen on the High Street.

Councillor Barbara Inman, said: “The return of a traditional tree in Stockton, particularly at 50ft, certainly made a dramatic impact and we are so pleased it has made someone’s Christmas wish come true.

"The transformation of the High Street meant this year’s decorations and Stockton Sparkles winter festival were bigger than ever which really helped to bring the spirit of Christmas to Stockton.

“Whoever left the beautiful embroideries has taken a great deal of care to make them and I hope they will get in touch so I can thank them for their lovely creations in person.”

The cone Christmas decoration is now on display at the Daisy Chain charity for families with autism at nearby Norton.

The embroiderer is being urged to contact the Mayor by calling 01642-527064 so that she can arrange to meet and thank them for their handicrafts.
