SABIC UK Petrochemicals has renewed its sponsorship of nature reserve, RSPB Saltholme for the fifth year running, becoming the site’s longest-serving corporate member on Teesside.

SABIC first became corporate RSPB members in 2010. Each year, the company provides around 300,000 cubic metres of clean waste-water to Saltholme, which is crucial in maintaining the correct water management regime on the reserve. It would otherwise cost the conservation charity a significant amount of money each year, and so enables them to save more funds to put into saving nature.

Mike Harris, RSPB Corporate Partnership Manager in northern England, said: “SABIC have been wonderful corporate members. Because of the company’s very close proximity to the reserve, staff often use Saltholme‘s café for lunch as an alternative to their own site, and as part of the membership, staff and their families are able to visit the reserve free of charge.”

Over the past few years, SABIC has joined in with a number of events and activities at Saltholme, including participating in a tree planting event and supporting the reserve’s annual Scandinavian Christmas event. SABIC was also one of a number of companies to join the RSPB during the summer holidays for its annual ‘Family evening’, when all the RSPB’s corporate members in the North-East were invited to Saltholme after hours to try their hand at pond dipping and mini-beast safaris.

Justin Williams, North Tees Senior Operations Manager at SABIC UK Petrochemicals, said: “We are very proud to continue our sponsorship of RSPB Saltholme, which together with the supply of water from our on-site facilities enables us to make a unique contribution towards maintaining the natural ecology of the North Tees area.”
