A COUNCILLOR has won his campaign to have more traffic calming measures imposed near a primary school.

A 20mph speed limit will be enforced and a large road hump will be installed on Oxbridge Lane, near to Oxbridge Lane Primary School, Stockton.

Ward councillor David Rose said there had not been a serious accident involving children, but earlier this year a motorist lost control of a car and crashed into pedestrian barriers.

The total cost of making the changes will be about £18,000. A previous 20mph speed limit was imposed on the smaller roads closest to the school two years ago following a public consultation survey but the new one will be imposed on an area of the busier Oxbridge Lane.

Cllr Rose said: "Vehicles are regularly seen travelling way above 30mph along this part of Oxbridge Lane. Hundreds of school children and their parents, shoppers, local residents and older people including from residential homes in the area cross this road and both peak and quieter times see cars going far too quickly.

"We have in the past year also seen a car out of control, and hitting the pedestrian barriers.

”We were able to secure significant funding from the central area transport budget, plus contribute via our own small ward budget, to put physical traffic calming measures.

"I discovered from Cleveland Police figures that when a speed camera has been deployed here, there have been literally hundreds of cars clocked as speeding."

The necessary statutory consultation period for the traffic calming measures on Oxbridge Lane has now ended with no objections. Work on the large speed bump and 20mph signage is due to start in February.
