HARDY volunteers are needed to help raise vital cash for a Redcar charity with the aim of highlighting the plight of homeless people.

The High Street Sleep Out is returning for the third year thanks to the efforts of Natalie King who benefited from the help of Coatham House 17 years ago.

Last year nearly 50 people braved the freezing weather to raise more than £5,000 for the charity, which has been working in the town for the last 20 years.

Ms King, who is helping Coatham House organise the event, said: “The charity provided support which was a vital lifeline when I needed it, and without it my life could have gone a very different way.

"Now 17 years later, I’m here organising my third High Street sleep out fundraiser and the second year raising funds solely for the Coatham House.

“The last event saw nearly 50 people brave the winter weather on a seaside high street and together they raised more than £5,000.

"Shop doorways were used as natural shelters by those taking part all the way from Redcar Clock to Superdrug.

“All the volunteers were wrapped up in their sleeping bags and supplies of cardboard and foil blankets to keep them warm, and having each other to feel safe and protected by.

"The reality for the people who face real homelessness, however, do not have those luxuries. They are often cold, often with just the clothes on their back.

"They are vulnerable to the people outside, scared, and alone. Hungry, thirsty and a lack of bathroom facilities are all things we take for granted when we have a place called home.”

The campaigner is urging people to bring a sleeping bag and join her on Saturday, January 24, to help the charity continue in providing accommodation to local homeless.

People wanting to take part can request a registration pack or get in touch via the facebook page ‘Redcar High Street Sleep Out’.

The charity’s Just Giving Page is due to be set up soon to make fundraising easier. Alternatively people can contact them on 01642-486844 for any information.
