A FUTURISTIC show set on the brink of a nuclear war in 2044 was inspired by homelessness in a North-East town.

Eden is performed at ARC, in Stockton, tomorrow night (WED) and is a piece of physical theatre created with the help of members of a homelessness charity.

Displace Yourself Theatre Company, which currently has a residency at ARC,developed the show after a workshop with Stockton based The Moses Project.

Members of the Moses Project, which helps socially excluded and homeless people in the area, highlighted how it can feel to be living on the ‘outskirts’ of society.

Mike Augur, of Displace Yourself, said: "The year is 2044 and the world is on the brink of nuclear war. The government has constructed these huge glass domes to inhabit citizens but there is not enough room for everybody so the government rolls out these tests to see who is the social elite.

"You can either see it is as just a futuristic sci fi love story but if you want to you can look deeper and see these layers of social exclusion. I think it is accessible to everyone."

Displace Yourself aims to change negative perceptions towards certain parts of society and the show is its first.

Laurence Waters, Director of The Moses Project, commented: “Those who attended the workshop earlier this year really enjoyed themselves. It helped build their self-confidence and gave them a different view on life –but most of all they felt they were listened to and their ideas and input were valued.”

The show itself is told through physical movement and satirical dialogue and follows two individuals on their emotional journey through various troubles.

Eden takes place at ARC on Wednesday, October 15 and tickets are still available.
