THE latest phase of £20m regeneration work in Stockton Town Centre has been completed.

Recent work has led to the creation of more parking as well as an events space at the northern end of the High Street.

An additional 23 short stay spaces are now available in the new car park opposite the Sun Public House.

Its introduction means people can park just a few steps away from the town centre’s range of unusual independent shops and businesses such as gemstone jeweller, Made by Marianne and Bennetts Fish Bar.

The area can also be easily converted into an events space including large markets.

Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Mike Smith, said: “The creation of this flexible space is really helping to transform both the look and feel of the High Street. It means people can easily drop-in and visit the many small businesses which are establishing themselves in the town or enjoy the many cultural and leisure opportunities available here, whether they be on the High Street or the Riverside which is just a short walk from this new space.”

The new short stay spaces combined with those in Bishop Street East and those which were introduced earlier this year outside the Shambles Market Hall means that there are now 57 parking bays on Stockton High Street.

Meanwhile, Bishop Street East has become home to one of Stockton’s first rapid car charger which will allow electric cars to recharge more quickly than using a standard charger – typically providing an 80 per cent charge in less than an hour. Parking is £1 for two hours.
