MORE than 150 families gathered together for a day of family fun in Stockton.

The first annual Castlegate Community Carnival took place at Stockton's parish hall and gardens on Saturday.

Families were greeted with a retro-style carnival supported by Punch & Judy, candy floss, swing boats, picnic boxes, and free toys.

Stockton-based Castlegate Shopping Centre organised and funded the event.

Centre Manager Karen Eve said: “We work creatively and collaboratively with communities and in particular target resources towards vulnerable groups.

“We’ve been delighted with the support and would like to highlight the efforts of charity consortium Synergy, based in Stockton, for their involvement and guidance.”

Inspired by Open Kitchen - an event the shopping centre delivered last Christmas to provide hot meals and a festive day out for those less fortunate - the shopping centre latest event was organised to help families in Stockton from deprived communities.

“Castlegate Community Carnival brought local partnerships agencies in collaboration with one another for one day and by doing so we have delivered a wonderful event creating enjoyment for many families with children in our area,” she added.

Castlegate Shopping Centre won the prestigious Heart Of The Community Award at the NE Business Awards and then went on to win the regional accolade for ‘Heart of The ‘Community at the North East Business Awards finals 2013.
