A TEAM of maths lovers proved they had the speed of thought to win a national contest.

The four children from Billingham’s St Joseph’s Primary School won the Maths in Motion final at the National Motor Museum in Gaydon.

They were amongst the best 15 primary schools in the UK who took part in the maths and engineering challenge.

The team, made up of 11-year-olds Erin Donnelly, Alex Smith, Sam Conway and team captain Harry Lawson, swept to victory by using their maths skills to set up a virtual Formula One racing car for a race.

Teacher Kev O’Donnell said: “They were amazing, they are all such lovely children – they have worked hard at their maths skills in school and it is great the hard work has paid off. They are very talented.”

The children won a host of prizes including Toshiba Tablets for themselves and some computer equipment for the school.
