FIVE North-East Labour MPs are today calling for a “people’s vote” to be held on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations.

They stress they do not want to re-run the referendum but they want the British people to have their say on whatever deal is brokered between the Government and the EU.

The five are Phil Wilson, the Sedgefield MP, Paul Williams of Stockton South, Anna Turley of Redcar, Catherine McKinnell of Newcastle Upon Tyne North and Bridget Phillipson of Houghton and Sunderland South.

Mr Wilson said last night: “We are now two years on from the referendum, and there are now issues and facts that were not known when people voted. The circumstances have changed.

“For example, when we voted we didn’t know anything about the £40bn divorce bill, and we now know that we are not going to receive £350m a week for the NHS.

“And we now know the impact it is likely to have on jobs, particularly here in the North-East, if we are outside the customs union.”

The five MPs have drafted an article which is to appear today on the Independent news channels, and it will come at the end of a week in which the House of Lords has inflicted embarrassing defeats on the Government’s Brexit Bill.

Labour Party policy is not to hold a second vote, although leader Jeremy Corbyn does want Britain to remain within some form of customs union.

Mr Wilson said: “This is bigger than party. It is about the future of the country.”

The article concludes: “The outcome of the negotiations will affect the North-East and the United Kingdom for decades to come. Because this is so important, we believe the British people should have their say on the final Brexit deal. Just as the people had their say in the referendum in 2016, we believe the final decision on this country’s destiny should lie with the British people in a People’s Vote.”

Mr Wilson, who is a passionate Remain campaigner, said: “The people might agree with the deal, but it has to be their decision.”
