A COMPANY’S salt supplies will be used to help communities tackle snowy weather this week.

Cleveland Potash responded to wintery weather forecasts by pledging to distribute up to 90 tonnes of salt from its mine at Boulby to help clear roads and footpaths around the area.

The company, which is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of road salt, will begin by delivering salt to schools and will then look to other organisations who may need help.

Distribution manager Mark Thompson said: “Each year, around two million tonnes of rock salt are spread onto the roads of Britain and a great deal of it is mined at Boulby.

“Normally, of course, we supply highway authorities across the country to keep the main routes open, but we thought we could also provide a helping hand closer at home, supporting local communities in coping with the cold spell expected over the next few days.

“As a company we have strong connections with the local community.

"We believe this is an opportunity for us to be good neighbours.”
