A HOUSE builder has donated £250 to Saltburn Beachwatch to help with the group’s campaign for a cleaner and safer beach.

Taylor Wimpey North Yorkshire’s cash boost will be used to issue the Friends of Saltburn with new litter picking tools as they carry out their seasonal litter picks and surveys throughout the year.

The Friends of Saltburn pass on the collected data to the Marine Conversation Society, who use the information to inform national environmental policies.

Roy Smith, organiser of Saltburn Beachwatch, said: “We accumulated an alarming 28 bags of rubbish from Saltburn beach at last year’s event in December. The bags weighed at 123 kilos. Over 6,500 items were removed with the majority being plastics and polystyrenes.“We’re very grateful to Taylor Wimpey for their kind donation. It’s great to see them support this urgent cause and share our passion for protecting the beach by stopping it becoming a plastic pollution zone.“With more families and organisations, such as the Scouts and Guides, regularly attending our litter picking events, the wider Saltburn community is becoming more aware of what damage is being done.”

Debbie Whittingham, of Taylor Wimpey, said: “Many of our residents are regular visitors to the beach, so we’re proud to back this fantastic campaign.”
