TWO cousins were today jailed for nine years each for taking turns to rape a teenage girl more than a decade ago.

Gary Fenton and Bryan George frog-marched their victim to Fenton’s Redcar bedsit where they forced themselves on her.

While she pleaded for them to stop, Fenton said: “You’re nothing but a slut”, Teesside Crown Court heard.

In an impact statement, she told how she struggles to cope day-to-day with what happened, and feels worthless and dirty.

The victim, now an adult but 16 or 17 at the time, said in the statement: “My whole being has been affected by this rape. I have no feelings of happiness or joy. I feel like an empty shell.

“Every day feels like the last day on earth. Without medication, I would kill myself.”

The men gave evidence during the trial, and while they admitted sex had taken place, they said it was consensual.

Rod Hunt, for father-of-five George, now 48, said without Fenton’s influence the incident would never have happened.

Chris Baker, for Fenton, said despite having a bad record for violence against women, he has no sexual convictions.

The 38-year-old is already serving a four-year sentence for punching, kicking and stamping on a former partner.

His nine-year jail term will start when that sentence –imposed in the summer – is complete, said Judge Peter Armstrong.

George, of Church Street, Redcar, and Fenton, from Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, were found guilty after a trial lasting eight days. They will be on the sex offenders’ register for life, and were given an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.

The court heard how Fenton, then of Westbourne Street, Stockton, was jailed for six years in 2010 for a glass attack on a partner.

Mr Baker told the judge: "It is accepted there are some serious offences of violence on his record in recent years.

"He was 22 or thereabouts at the time of this offending, and he had no convictions for this type of offence, and still doesn't."

Judge Armstrong told the men: "She was saying 'please don't' over and over, and despite her protestations, you had your way with her.

"When you were arrested, Fenton you made no reply, and George you lied straight away saying there had been no sexual activity whatsoever.

"You have stood trial and both claimed the sexual activity was with consent. The jury saw through that and convicted you.

"The victim has suffered severe psychological harm, and there is the additional humiliation and degradation of the two of you having sex with her."

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds said there had also been "prolonged detention" in the bedsit, and described the attacks as "sustained".

George could be heard in adjoining courtrooms repeatedly screaming "no" when the jury delivered its verdict after four hours' deliberating.

He sobbed and shook his head during the sentencing exercise, while his cousin showed no emotion and simply stared straight ahead.
