A WOMEN’S centre threw a huge party to mark a milestone anniversary.

The manager of the Tees Valley Women’s Centre (TVWC) reflected on its importance as its 30th anniversary was celebrated.

For three decades, women from all cultures and backgrounds have found a safe place to thrive in Middlesbrough’s South Bank.

The TVWC offers a variety of courses, advice and guidance as well as access to legal services, a crèche and employment opportunities.

Manager Kathy Lloyd said: “I think the centre’s success is down to the women who come to us.

“Some walk in for the first time with no confidence, they come through the door and are supported to go on and do what they want to do, we see them go on to get jobs and education – it’s fantastic.

“The centre began when a group of women came together and said they wanted a safe space for themselves and their children.

“We’ve grown from there and the women who come feel like they’re a part of this, it’s empowering.

“We don’t make the decisions without consulting them first and I think that’s why we’ve survived so long.”

Ms Lloyd added: “The centre helps women to improve their quality of life and it’s a home from home, somewhere they feel equal and taken seriously.”
