BEACHES in the North-East will receive a tidy-up this weekend as volunteers head to the coast for the Great British Beach Clean.

Saltburn and Redcar's beaches will be cleaned up from today until September 18.

The national campaign is led by the Marine Conservation Society in its aim to tackle waste and litter in the UK’s seas.

In support of the campaign, Saltburn Beachwatch and Marske Litter Action are undertaking a beach clean and survey on Saltburn’s coast today between 10am and 12pm.

The Local Marine Conservation Society and partners FRED (Friends of Redcar) will also be taking part on Redcar’s coast on Sunday from 11am to 12pm.

Councillor Christopher Massey, deputy leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “Both the Council and our residents are passionate about the borough's beaches.

"I would therefore like to thank all of the community groups and individual volunteers who are doing fantastic work for the ‘Love it’ campaign by taking care of our beautiful coastline and supporting the Marine Conservation Society.

"We all want to see positive changes to our Borough such as a cleaner environment," he added.
