A MAN who wielded a kitchen knife in a public place and attacked and injured a woman is facing a jail sentence.

Jamie Bywater, of High Street, Great Broughton, North Yorkshire, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon during an incident in Guisborough on November 26 last year.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the female victim was not known to Bywater and it was a “very unusual set of circumstances”.

The defendant’s barrister Julian Gaskin said Bywater had been sectioned two days later and had drug psychosis issues.

He said Bywater’s partner was due to give birth to their first child next month and asked for a pre-sentence report to be drawn up.

Bywater, who has a previous conviction for wounding, had his case adjourned until May 17 and was given bail by The Recorder of Middlesbrough, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton.

The judge said the 26-year-old had displayed good sense in pleading guilty and would be given appropriate credit, but should not expect anything other than a jail sentence.
