A ‘MINI-PARALYMPICS’ led to a medal haul for children from East Cleveland.

The regional finals of the North-East Panathlon Games saw children from Brotton’s Freebrough Academy take bronze.

The pupils represented Redcar and Cleveland as they competed at Gateshead International Stadium recently.

Ailsa Bell, sports coordinator at the academy for children with multiple disabilities, said the school was delighted to qualify and to give pupils the opportunity to experience Panathlon.

She added: “The environment is conducive to them feeling comfortable, which enables them to perform to their best.”

The Panathlon Games offers sport to children usually denied the opportunity to compete, with adapted games including javelin, table cricket and boccia.

Panathlon’s chief operating officer, Tony Waymouth, thanked Gateshead Council for supporting the event.
