SUSPICIOUS material found at a property in Redcar is not illegal, after a bomb disposal team had been called out to investigate, police have confirmed.

Police were called to an incident at a house on Arthur Street at 10.50pm last night after a man barricaded himself inside the property.

After carrying out door to door enquires, they discovered some suspicious materials at a separate address.

No arrests have been made in relation to the incident involving the suspicious material, but Cleveland Police confirmed a 27-year-old man has been arrested for criminal damage, causing a public nuisance and affray and he is currently in police custody.

Arthur Street from its junction to Newcomen Terrace is currently taped off as a result of police investigations.

Cleveland Police have confirmed 23 people were evacuated from the street at 1.50am this morning and taken to Redcar Leisure Centre due to a potential gas leak threat.

Those evacuated were allowed back into their homes at 6.00am this morning.

Cleveland Police confirmed the incident was not terror related.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Police can confirm a 27-year-old man from Arthur Street in Redcar has been arrested for Criminal Damage, Causing a Public Nuisance and Affray and he is currently in police custody.

"In a second incident in Arthur Street – police can now confirm that the ‘material’ found inside a house is not illegal. 

"The EOD are satisfied the material was not a danger to the public and no arrests have been made."
