AN MP has called on the Government to give official status to a popular ‘Coast to Coast’ walk.

Tom Blenkinsop, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said the Coast to Coast walk, which links the Cumbrian village of St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast, should be granted National Trail status.

This, he said, would give it access to funding and raise its profile.

Mr Blenkinsop was speaking in a House of Commons debate secured by Richmond Conservative MP Rishi Sunak, who has worked closely with the 'Make It National' campaign in a bid to secure National Trail status for the Coast to Coast walk.

Mr Blenkinsop said: “I hope that recognition of this walk will draw more tourists into our region.

"The route passes by Guisborough and through Saltburn, both of which have small business that would benefit hugely from an increase in visitors.

“Tourist attractions such as East Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum could also really benefit from an increase in Coast to Coast’s profile.

“I hope the Government considers this closely and can help get the Coast to Coast walk the funding and profile it deserves.”
