A TALENTED young gardener will be swapping her parents' open garden event for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) after securing a much sought-after apprenticeship.

Beth Hutchinson will start a two year apprenticeship at the RHS centre at Harlow Carr in Harrogate in August but first she needs to help her parents put the finishing touches to their gardens before on open event on Sunday.

The 19-year-old joked: "I'm really looking forward to starting my course and being able to come back to show my parents what I have learnt and give them some tips.

"I have always loved gardening and can't wait to try my hand at all the different skills that I will be learning over the two years."

Her garden at the Ivories, Vaughan Street, North Skelton, and neighbour Daphne Hurworth's house at 60 Windermere Drive, will be open between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday as part of the fundraising National Gardens Scheme (NGS).

Mrs Hurworth said: "It's quite a coup for us to get involved with the NGS and get people to explore our gardens."
