TRIBUTES have been paid to the worker who died last Friday in an incident down Boulby potash mine.

John Anderson was killed following a ‘gas blow-out’ 1,000m below ground and up to 5,000m out beneath the North Sea, off the east Cleveland coast.

The family of the popular 56-year-old have issued a statement and picture through Cleveland Police.

Mr Anderson’s family, who knew him as Rich, said: “We are a large and very close family and we are each grieving in our own way however we ALL remember him as a loyal and caring husband to Cath, a supportive and understanding father to twins Ricky and Alan, 35; daughter Kirsty 34; and to youngest son 30-year-old Jon.

“He was a welcoming father in law to Lloyd, Tara, and Vicky, a much loved brother to Theresa, Sue, Alison, David and Ann ( who is recently deceased) a much loved brother in law to Victor, Rose-Mary, Graham, Elaine, Steven, Stuart, Steve and Phil.

“John, known to us all as Rich, was a very hard working colleague and a great friend but above all an amazing and dedicated Grandad to Callum, 16; Caitlin 13; Olivia 13; Ewan, nine; Aliyah, seven; Leon, seven; Lucas, three; Elias, two; Riley, one; Tyler, sixteen; and 14-year-old Imogen and was a well-respected uncle and great-uncle.

“His sudden death has left us all utterly devastated. He was a truly great, unassuming man with a blistering work ethic.

“Our Dad was always happiest around his grandchildren and was a very loving and playful grandfather, excellent role model as a parent and without question a fantastic husband to our mother Catherine.

“We would like to express our sincerest thanks and appreciation to everyone who has sent cards, flowers, words of support and messages at this very difficult time.”

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Mines is working alongside the owner's of the mine to investigate the cause of the incident.

Mr Anderson lived in the village of Easington, near Loftus.
