TOWNS and cities are being offered the chance to host the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018 – a two month exhibition showcasing the best of art, culture and design across the North.

The exhibition is being backed by £5 million of funding from the Government.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, will chair a board which will consider applications to host the event and report back to ministers.

He said: “There are many towns and cities that have what it takes to host this exhibition and I hope they put in high quality bids.”

Pat Chapman, head of external relations at Cleveland College of Art and Design, which has sites in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, said: “We welcome any support from Government which celebrates the very great cultural and creative contribution made by the North.

“We would encourage the Tees Valley arts community to offer a spectacular bid and show them what we can do.”

The competition will close in June this year and the chosen venue will be announced in the autumn.
