ONE of the region's MPs is to abseil down the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle for charity in memory of one her teenage constituents.

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar, was the first person to sign up for the challenge which will raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust which funds a specialist cancer unit in the hospital.

Ms Turley said she has taken on the challenge in memory of Georgina Anderson, of Marske, near Redcar who died of a rare form of cancer in November 2013.

The MP said: “I am proud to be supporting the amazing work of Teenage Cancer Trust as my Charity of the Year in memory of Georgina. Scaling the heights of the RVI is nothing compared to the amazing strength and bravery of Georgina in her battle with cancer.

"The money we raise will help Teenage Cancer Trust continue their work and help many more young people in their fight with the disease.”

Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, the Teenage Cancer Trust aims to help young people suffering from the disease to be together.

There are two Teenage Cancer Trust units in Newcastle: one at the Great North Children’s Hospital and one at the Freeman Hospital.

So far Ms Turley has raised £624 on her online fundraising site. To sponsor her go to justgiving.com/TeamTurley201516
