EMOTIONAL tributes have been paid to a veteran councillor who died in January.

Peter Spencer was a hugely popular member of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and today (Thursday, February 11) colleagues from all parties spoke glowingly of his distinctive style and personality.

The Conservative member had represented Guisborough’s Hutton ward on the authority since 1999, had lived in Guisborough for more than 50 years and had been involved in local politics since the 1960s.

Cllr Valerie Halton, Conservative group leader, led the praise at today's (Thursday, February 11) full council meeting.

She said: “We both stood for election in 1999 when we were both elected and we work together throughout that time. He had a great passion for the area and he will be greatly missed.”

Labour’s council leader Cllr Sue Jeffrey praised the cross party efforts of her fellow councillor, who died after a battle with cancer.

“He was always there to provide support and helpful advice,” she said. “It wasn’t just about his own ward and his own area, it was about everything that happened in Redcar and Cleveland.”

And Liberal Democrat Cllr Mary Ovens said Cllr Spencer was always a helpful member of the council who had a passion for the area.
