A MAN was arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen van after an accident which left a woman trapped underneath a vehicle in an east Cleveland village yesterday (Sunday, January 17).

The woman's legs were believed to have been crushed between the van and a lamp post after after the collision on Brotton High Street.

Police said the 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owners' consent, and driving without a licence, after the accident at about 2.30pm.

The 35-year-old female pedestrian was freed from under the van by firefighters before being taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by road ambulance, suffering from non life-threatening leg injuries.

The high street road was closed off by police while the Great North Air Ambulance landed and the woman was assessed and by the onboard doctor and paramedic, before being taken to hospital by road.

Firefighters from Loftus and Skelton helped free the woman from under the van.

The arrested man has now been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.
