A WELL-KNOWN seaside pub has closed.

The Clarendon, at the corner of High Street and West Dyke Road in Redcar, finally called time last week after more than 160 years.

The pub, originally known as The Railway Hotel as it was next the town's original railway station, had been featured on a list of Camra recommended pubs on Teesside and has been frequented by generations of holiday-makers.

Dozens of people left messages on the Clarry - Redcar Facebook site to express their disappointment and hopes that it could re-open in the future. Many people praised the efforts of the outgoing landlady, Yvonne Jackson, and her team who tried to keep it open.

Andrew Welch said: "Such a shame, class pub with the right people in charge." Tony Peacock added: "Sarah and Yvonne you had a good try to sort it out. You made it a good friendly lively pub. I hope someone takes it over and tries to turn it around."

The pub was built in 1845 and changed its name to The Clarendon, after a well-known landowner, in 1861 after the railway station was moved to its current site.
