RESIDENTS of a care home evacuated when the roof of the building next door was torn off by high winds were moved back home today (Tuesday, November 24).

Homes on part of Marine Parade, in Saltburn, east Cleveland, and neighbouring Amber Street were evacuated early on Saturday morning after gale-force winds ripped the roof off a building on Marine Parade.

Staff from Seaview care home turned up at 4am and braved falling debris from the roof to get to the home, to help night staff carry residents out of a side door into a waiting minibus.

The residents were taken to another care home in the town, Greta Cottage, for three nights before returning today.

The roof on the property next door had blown off, exposing residents in top floor flats to the elements, during one of the worst storms the seaside town has seen.

Debris from the roof crashed on to the street, damaging cars, and into yards down the street. A wooden stake came through the roof of the staff kitchen at Seaview once residents had been evacuated.

Heather Garcia, owner of Seaview, said: "The structural engineer checked the roof next door and said it was safe to move the residents back now.

"The road is still closed while they carry out work but they have said it is safe for us to come back.

"The residents all think they have been on holiday and have met lots of new people at the other care home. They have really enjoyed themselves."
