A LEISURE centre which has been closed since January will open its doors on Sunday.

Guisborough Swim and Fitness Centre is holding a special activity day to mark its reopening after a £650,000 revamp.

Families will be given the chance to try the swimming pool and gym free on Sunday, while group exercise classes will take place through the day. Club taster sessions will also be on from 9-11am.

The centre closed for refurbishment on January 19, and since then a section of the centre building has been completely rebuild, with a new outer structure to house the swimming pool, which has been re-tiled.

Other improvements include a new boiler, solar panels and new air conditioning system, and the building's carbon footprint will be reduced.

Another £50,000 from the operator Everyone Active, which manages the centre in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland council, has bought new equipment for the gym.

Christine Crawley, Everyone Active’s general manager at Guisborough Swim and Fitness Centre, said: “All of the work carried out over the past six months has undoubtedly enhanced the quality of the facilities at Guisborough Swim and Fitness Centre and we’re excited to showcase them at the fun day."

Councillor Shelagh Holyoake, Councillor for the Guisborough Ward, said: “I am very happy that Guisborough’s facilities have received a well-deserved refurbishment, and hopefully they will be enjoyed by residents young and old."

The Conservative Councillor for Guisborough, Dennis Teasdale, added: “My three grandchildren who live in Guisborough are members of the swimming club and I know they are excited about returning to Guisborough baths for their training sessions and competitions. I am sure all regular users are really looking forward to the baths reopening."
