REDCAR'S annual lifeboat day raised more than £3,000 for the town’s RNLI volunteers.

The day saw the unusual sight of both the Redcar RNLI lifeboats on show in the High Street, where members of the public were able to see the craft up-close and chat to the crew about their lifesaving work.

Ian Readman, chairman of the Redcar RNLI, said: "I’d like to genuinely thank everyone who made a donation towards the work our brave crews do, day in and day out.

"There are a lot of charities vying for the same money and I’m always astounded at the generosity people show towards the RNLI.

"Our volunteer crews at Redcar have had a busy few days with a rescue at the cliffs at Saltburn, and dealing with a tricky rescue of a man who capsized an inflatable craft in the surf.

"But despite that they turned out for lifeboat day and, together with the Lifeboat Ladies Guild, were in the High Street for hours collecting funds."

Redcar has the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world, The Zetland, which was launched in 1802.
