THE gardens of a Grade I-listed country house will be opened to the public this weekend.

Skelton Castle, a privately-owned 18th Century Gothic-style house built on the grounds of the destroyed castle, opens up its gardens on June 27 and 28 between 11am and 4pm as part of an Open Gardens event.

It is one of several gardens in the Skelton area open to the public this weekend. The location of the others are available to people who buy a ticket and programme.

The events have been organised by Skelton Villages Civic Pride (SVCP) to celebrate the community. A spokeswoman for SVCP said: "The gardens will feature varied styles and some have outstanding views which can be enjoyed by visitors."

There will be light refreshments and plants for sale. Tickets and more information are available in advance in Skelton library and some shops on the High Street and on the day at Skelton Civic Centre Car Park, Coniston Road, TS12 2HP. Tickets are £5 per person.
