A TOWN came together to stage a charity football match in memory of a teenager killed in a car accident.

Jordan Dowson, 19, died when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a three-vehicle accident on the A174 Brotton bypass in February last year.

At the weekend, a charity football match was played at Guisborough Football Club between former team mates from the Black Swan, and a team of Black Swan legends mostly made up of players Mr Dowson played with for other teams.

His brothers Callum, 19, and Ty, 18, played for the Black Swan and mum Tanya was at the match.

She said: “All the support has been overwhelming. It’s great to see so many people here who want to come and support the event, and remember Jordan.

“Last year we raised about £1,000 and we hope to get about the same again.

"Local businesses and friends and family have been great donating things, so we hope to get as much as we can.”

Mr Dowson's grandfather, Michael Dowson, who helped organise the event, said: “Guisborough came together today. That’s what it’s like here and it’s great to see.

“Jordan was into his football, and most of the lads here will have played football with him at some point.

“It is obviously a sad thing that has led to us holding this, but the togetherness is something positive that has come out of it all.”

As well as the Black Swan, Mr Dowson also played for Guisborough Globe FC in the Teesside Football League Division Two.

Julie Purdy, who Jordan knew as Auntie Julie, was also at the event and said: “Jordan was just a wonderful person and people loved him.

“The amount of people that have turned out to remember him proves how popular he was.

“He’d be loving this - he’s probably looking down on us and smiling and dancing.”

All funds raised will go to Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice and Cancer Research.
