A YOUNGSTER has won his own weight in chips after guessing the height of a distinctive landmark.

George Hoy correctly worked out it that it would take 405 chips standing end-to-end to match the height of the Redcar Beacon.

The 11-year-old won the fun prize from Oliver’s Fish and Chips takeaway in his Redcar hometown as part of a fun competition to celebrate National Chip Week.

It means the St Benedict’s Primary School pupil can now look forward to munching his way through his weight in chips.

Weighing in at 4st 7lbs – around 30kgs – he can still look forward to enjoying 78 complimentary portions.

He hasn’t decided whether to ask for the help of sisters Beatrice, nine, and Eloisa, seven, to help devour his prize.

He said: “What I did was I just worked out how long each chip was and then guessed how many metres high the Beacon was. I knew it was very high because I’ve been right to the top.”

His mother, Lisa, added: “We just wish George was a bit bigger as he could have won a lot more chips – but despite being one of the oldest he’s also one of the smallest in his class.”

Oliver’s head fryer Mike Roberts, who runs the award-winning Bath Street takeaway and restaurant with wife Helen, said: “The Beacon is actually 384 chips high – so it was a cracking guess by George, especially as he also submitted two more very good guesses on behalf of his sisters.”
