AN international event to stop abuse against women and girls will be marked in Redcar & Cleveland with an awareness event.

White Ribbon Day is an annual event, designed to get as many men and boys as possible to pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about abuse against women and girls.

Organisations, groups and individuals throughout the borough will pledge their support as part of the campaign, being launched at a breakfast event, on Tuesday, November 25 at Tuned In! on Majuba Road, Redcar.

Councillor Steven Goldswain, cabinet member for community safety, said: “White Ribbon Day is an excellent way to raise awareness of domestic abuse by encouraging people pledge their support.

“Sadly, many people live in fear within their own homes and close relationships and this can affect all areas of their life.

“As a man getting behind this campaign you are presenting yourself as a positive role model, and I would urge men of all ages throughout the borough, to pledge their support and take a stand.”

From 7.30am to 10am people will be able to find out more about the campaign.

Barry Coppinger, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, added: “I am pleased to be supporting the White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness of such an important topic that features heavily within my Police and Crime Plan."
