A WOMAN whose cheek was fractured during a horrific attack by her ex-boyfriend chillingly forecast: "I think he'll probably kill me one day."

"Maniac" Paul Summersgill dragged her across the floor by the hair, smashed her head into a mirror, repeatedly kicked her and tried to choke her.

The 41-year-old also stamped on the woman's head, repeatedly punched her in the face and vowed to kill her, as his horrified daughter looked on.

The girl described her father as "looking evil and full of fury" as he launched the drunken attack at his home in Redcar, east Cleveland, in August.

Teesside Crown Court heard how Summersgill had been released early from a sentence imposed in 2009 for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he tried to strangle his victim.

His partner later described their relationship as "volatile" and told detectives Summersgill was "a maniac who could turn on a sixpence".

In an impact statement read to the court, she said: "He was choking me, and I thought I was going to die. I think he will probably kill me one day.

"I do not want to see Paul ever again, and I hope he will not be let out after this incident."

Summersgill, of Soppitt Street, Redcar, was jailed for five-and-a-half years after admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault.

Duncan McReddie, mitigating, said Summersgill pleaded guilty as early as he could so his former partner and daughter did not have to give evidence.

"He accepts his record is deeply unpleasant, but he doesn't necessarily see himself as an intrinsically violent man, but one with deep-seated personal problems," said Mr McReddie.
