A KNIFEPOINT robbery took place at a Sainsbury’s store in Redcar in which a thief stole cigarettes and a quantity of cash.

Cleveland Police said no one was hurt in the incident but staff had been left shaken after a man entered the store at about 6.40am this morning (Thursday, August 21) brandishing a knife.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “It’s believed a second man was also involved and police are trying to establish the circumstances around the incident.

“This includes getting exact descriptions of the men involved from witnesses at the scene.”

Officers say while no staff or customers were hurt, a number were left shaken by the incident. They are appealing for anyone who was in the shop at the time of the offence to come forward.”

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at our Redcar Local in Larkswood Road. We are assisting the police with their investigation.”
