ROLLER Derby enthusiasts are to take on a team from Argentina in what has been described as a “David and Goliath” clash.

Middlesbrough Roller Derby will tackle a visiting team from Buenos Aires, 2x4 Roller Derby.

The Argentinians, who are ranked far higher than their Teesside counterparts, are in the UK to take part in the Roller Derby World Cup, being held next month in Manchester.

It is hoped the game will draw a bigger than usual crowd to Middlesbrough Roller Derby’s home, Eston Sports Academy.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track.

It is dominated by all-female amateur teams and was under consideration for the 2020 summer Olympics.

Terri Sudron, co-captain of Middlesbrough Roller Derby, said “This will be a really tough game for us and all the predictions are saying that we’ll lose.

“The team has been training really hard and we’re going to go out there and score as many points as we can.

“We’re Teessiders, we’re not pushovers.”

  • Doors open at 7pm on Tuesday January 30 and the match itself begins at 7.30pm.
