POLICE have arrested 10 people, including a 16-year-old boy, as they clamped down on bad behaviour during today's FA Cup 3rd round match between Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Cleveland Police have confirmed the 10 people are all in custody following Middlesbrough's 2-0 victory at the Riverside this afternoon.

One 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of throwing a missile.

Three men, aged 27, 30 and 33 were arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and affray.

A 34-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of affray, and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing and resisting a police officer.

Finally, two men, both aged 21, were arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "Bad behaviour will not be tolerated."

Around 4,500 Sunderland fans were expected to make the short trip down the A19 to take on their Championship rivals.

Yesterday, Superintendent Dave Sutherland said: “Cleveland Police works with Middlesbrough FC and others to ensure that football matches are as safe, crime-free and as enjoyable as possible.

“The vast majority of those attending the game will be genuine fans who turn up to support their team with family and friends.

“Both clubs have a passionate and vocal following and Middlesbrough should be proud of the huge support shown to them by their fans.

“There are, unfortunately, a minority of people who sometime use football as an excuse for causing trouble through antisocial, drunken or violent behaviour

“At best this spoils it for genuine fans and at worst it can undermine public safety.

“Such behaviour will not be tolerated and we will work with the football clubs to ensure that those responsible for this type of behaviour are prosecuted and/or banned from future games.”
