POLICE say a hit-and-run incident outside a nightclub was not terror-related.

Cleveland Police issued a statement on Sunday night following the incident outside the Empire nightclub on Corporation Road in Middlesbrough.

The driver of a car failed to stop and two men, aged 18 and 20, were taken to James Cook University Hospital. The younger victim was seriously injuried while the 20-year-old suffered only minor injuries.

"CCTV footage has been viewed and the vehicle did not mount the pavement – nor did it reverse over the victims as has been reported on some social media sites," the spokesman said.

"This incident is not believed to be terrorist related and police are again appealing for anyone who witnessed it or saw the vehicle prior to the collision to contact Cleveland police on 101.

"A number of witnesses have telephoned police and they will be re-contacted by officers."

  • A 39-year-old man has been arrested and is still being questioned by police.
