POLICE have released photographs of football fans in their attempt to track down hooligans responsible for sparking violence at a match.

Pictures of eight Sheffield United supporters were published today as part of Cleveland Police’s investigation into violence and disorder at a recent match.

On Saturday, August 12, a match between Middlesbrough FC and Sheffield United descended into chaos, with around 200 fans brawling and goading each other outside the Riverside Stadium.

The ugly scenes were ignited after Sheffield United fans became enraged when the referee failed to award what appeared to be a last minute equaliser when the team were losing 1-0.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police appealed to the public for help in identifying those fans photographed, adding: “The disorder took place primarily around car park E after the match.

“Inquiries are on-going with both clubs and South Yorkshire Police supporting our investigation.

“Several arrests have already been made, with further expected in due course.”

The force will also attempt to obtain football banning orders where appropriate in a bid to “keep football a family friendly game which is safe and enjoyable for all.”
