A SPECIAL cinema screening for dementia sufferers of a classic film has proved a hit.
Cineworld, in Middlesbrough, put on The King and I, starring Yul Brynner, for an audience of about 120 people.
Staff provided a safe and comfortable environment for those living with the brain disease and their carers to watch the film.
The initiative has been praised by the organisation Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough. The Big Lottery funded project Ageing Better Middlesbrough also provided support.
Brian Rowcroft, from Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough, said: “This is a great example of how organisations are working together to create a welcoming space for people living with dementia.”
Peter Elliot, 81, an Ageing Better Middlesbrough volunteer, whose wife has dementia, said: “It is absolutely brilliant - there is nothing else like this in the area.”
Matt O’Hara, operations manager at Cineworld, which has now begun regular monthly showings for dementia sufferers, said: “It has surpassed all my expectations, people are coming from far and wide to attend.”
