A HEAD teacher has thanked the fire brigade for ‘saving our school’ after a fire broke out.

No children or staff were hurt in the incident at Pennyman Primary Academy in Middlesbrough on Thursday.

Teachers walked pupils home whose parents could not be contacted as the school had to be closed. It remains closed on Friday.

Executive head teacher Katrina Morley praised the fire brigade for ‘saving our school’.

She said ‘significant tax payer’ money has been saved thanks to the fire brigade despite them facing cuts ‘left, right and centre’.

She also said she was ‘proud to be part of this community’ after local shops and schools helped out during the incident.

The school is expected to reopen by Monday at the latest, according to Ms Morley. No classrooms or books have been affected.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said they were called to the school at 7.30am and were yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Four fire engines were sent to put out the fire which was dealt with by 8.50am.

They also confirmed the caretaker's store cupboard was destroyed and there was “light smoke damage” to the rest of the building.
