FORMER England, Manchester United and Middlesbrough star Bryan Robson was back in the region at the weeked for a charity fundraiser.

Robson, who managed the Teessiders and captained his country, was helping raise funds for Billingham Juniors at the Swan Hotel in the town.

Robson, who recently turned 60, was greeted with a huge standing ovation as he was remembered by hundreds of fans and recalled his time as Boro boss across a seven-year period.

He walked to the stage as the Middlesbrough FC theme 'Pigbag' was played.

Robson, now Global Ambassador for Manchester United, said: "It is wonderful to be back home and to be able to chat about that most memorable period.

"Just driving past the Riverside tonight brought so many happy memories flooding back.

"Together with (chairman) Steve Gibson we were able to create some magical times for those very special fans. Players like Juninho, Merson, Ravanelli, Gazza and so many more simply made it unforgettable.

"The response from the fans in Billingham was brilliant and it was touching to see people carrying old newspaper cuttings of that period and telling me how it will always be a very memorable part of their lives.

"I so wish Boro and Steve Gibson every good wish in their battle to stay in the Premiership - Steve and the fans really deserve that."

When asked about a return to management following the dismissal of Aitor Karanka the former Manchester United great said: "I'm out to dinner with the chairman on Saturday night, so I may just order a few large drinks and give him my CV."

Robson was interviewed by BBC Tees presenter Paul ' Goffy' Gough and spoke for close on two-and-a-half hours.
