THE CHRISTMAS spirit is still strong in Nunthorpe, where panto performers are preparing to take to the stage.

An energetic take on Rapunzel will be staged by the Nunthorpe Players in their annual pantomime, which opens on Sunday.

The group, founded in 1962, traditionally time their pantos for the end of January “to liven up a dull, grey month after Christmas”.

Director Cath Calloway, who has been involved with the company for 30 years, said: “Rapunzel is a romp through the forest, with lots of hair.

“The cast are feeling nervous but excited as the performance approaches.”

The show will star a number of young people, some of them taking to the stage for the first time.

Producer Liz Taylorson said: “It’s great to see all of the young people in the chorus on stage and enjoying themselves.

“They should be very proud after all the work they have put in over the last few months.

“For some of them it’s their first time on stage and they’ve done brilliantly.”

Tickets are still available for performances taking place at 4pm on Sunday and from Wednesday, January 25 to 28, at 7.30pm.
