LAND belonging to one of the region’s most popular tennis clubs could be sold to make way for a housing development.
Tennis World, based off Marton Road in Middlesbrough, plans to sell of space which currently houses disused clay courts.
The sale of the one hectare piece of land is expected to generate around £200,000, which will be used to improve playing surfaces, lighting and the car park.
The proposal is in line with Middlesbrough Council’s Sports Strategy which includes a commitment to enhance sporting facilities across the borough.
Cllr Nicky Walker, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for finance and governance, said: “Tennis is currently enjoying a golden era in the UK, and that’s reflected in the sport’s growing popularity locally.
“We’re committed to making tennis more accessible and Tennis World’s location next to the flourishing Middlesbrough Sports Village makes it ideally suited.”
A report on the proposals will be considered by the council’s executive sub-committee for property on Wednesday, May 25.
