THE iconic Bottle of Notes in Middlesbrough is to be lit up in red to mark World AIDS Day.

Middlesbrough Council is joining forces with local sexual health services and Virgin Care for the illumination which will start at 5pm today.

Members of the public can also show support by attending the event or simply by wearing red ribbons.

Councillor Mick Thompson, the council’s executive member for supporting communities and public health, said: “We are proud to be supporting World AIDS Day and lighting up the Bottle of Notes in red to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.

“Both conditions have been stigmatised by misconceptions that we need to tackle. Today, an early diagnosis and treatment of HIV results in a normal life and life expectancy.

“We hope as many people as possible can support us in uniting to raise awareness, either by joining us for the event or by wearing a red ribbon.”

Diagnosis is quick and easy through either a blood or finger prick test which can be ordered online or through the post.

Testing in person is also available through GP services or local sexual health services.
