THREE Salvation Army churches have joined forces to deliver presents to struggling families this Christmas.

Officer and volunteers from Middlesbrough Citadel, Middlesbrough Pallister Park and Middlesbrough West Central are attempting the region's biggest gift appeal yet and they are Christmas shoppers to buy an extra present to help children and families in need.

People can drop off their new, unwrapped toys at the five Jennings motor garages on Middlesbrough's Cargo Fleet Lane and the Salvation Army will also be collecting presents between 10am and 1pm on Friday at the Bus Station in Middlesbrough bus station.

Gifts can also be dropped off at the three Salvation Army citadels and can include anything, from soft toys and games to books and clothing, provided they are new and not gift-wrapped, as volunteers will wrap and distribute them to families at a later date.

Captain Mark Anderson, church leader of Middlesbrough Pallister Park Salvation Army, said: “More and more people in this area are struggling to make ends meet and Christmas can be the biggest strain on their already stretched finances. It’s heart breaking, especially for families who want to make it as special as possible for their children but simply can’t afford the cost of buying presents, along with everything else, over the festive period. “The people of Middlesbrough are a generous bunch who always amaze us with their fantastic support of our gift appeals. Times are hard for everyone so we’re especially grateful for all the donations we receive. We know how much joy these toys and gifts bring to the families we give them to.”

The last day donations can be received is Monday, December 19.
