YOUNG people from Middlesbrough College paid a visit to a retirement home to lend a helping hand.

The group of 12 students visited Elizabeth House Retirement and Care Home in North Ormesby to give residents company, and to present them with handmade gifts.

Their visit was part of MC Academy’s strategy to make sure young people are invested in their communities, and to give them experiences that make a lasting impression.

Sharon McIntyre, learning support assistant at the college, said: “This trip to Elizabeth House was really important. By talking to elderly people at the home and taking along these gifts they give the residents a more enjoyable day and show that young people – who sometimes get bad press – are caring.

“We aim to give our MC Academy students a perspective on other people they might not come into contact with – that could include the elderly, employers or other young people.”

The group of 14 and 15-year-olds are studying a range of subjects, including construction, engineering and catering, at the college.
