MEMBERS of the public are being warned about blue-green algae found in the water at Hemlington Lake, in Middlesbrough.
The algae, which occurs naturally during periods of warm weather, is known to be harmful to humans and some animals.
In humans the algae can cause rashes after skin contact, and if swallowed can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and muscle and joint pain.
The toxins can also kill wild animals, farm livestock and domestic pets.
Although there have been no long-term health problems or human deaths, members of the public are advised to keep themselves and pets away from the water’s edge, and avoid contact with the scum on the water.
There are warning notices in place at all entrances to Hemlington Lake.
