POLICE sniffer dog Paddy has retired after six years’ loyal service with Cleveland Police.
The black cocker spaniel, aged seven, has been with the force’s dog support unit since he was a pup.
Paddy is trained to detect drugs, cash and weapons and was offered as a gift to police from a family who got him as a puppy and found him too lively. He was assessed, deemed suitable for a course and has been with the force ever since.
A spokeswoman said: “Paddy has now retired with a new family and is now spending his days with his paws up on the sofa and his nights in a double bed.”
His best finds included the recovery of a shot gun and ammunition which was concealed in waste ground, and also a cash find of about £200,000 which was concealed within a property.
Cleveland Police is appealing for any dogs who could be retrained as sniffer dogs, in particular any gun breed dog up to about 18 months old who enjoys chasing balls or toys. Anyone with a suitable dog can contact Inspector Shelli Gordon on 101.
