MORE than 1,000 youngsters from schools across the Tees Valley were joined by former Olympians in two days of competition at the annual school games.

Boxer Amanda Coulson and gymnast Craig Heap provided inspiration for youngsters taking part in the event, which took place at Middlesbrough Sports Village and Eston Leisure Centre.

The new athletics track was the backdrop for a day of intense competition, with 182 youngsters competing in 45 track and field events.

An off-road cycling circuit also proved popular.

Guisborough’s Laurence Jackson School came out top in the boys’ competition, while Polam Hall won the girls’ event.

Events included tennis, cycling, table tennis, netball, hockey, disability football, tri-golf, volleyball and pantathlon.

Professional freestyle BMX rider Keelan Phillips, who has been placed in international competitions from Hungary to the USA, also gave a display to youngsters.

The School Games is a national fully-inclusive competition for school children, and events are held across the UK. They are the culmination of inter-school sports across the Tees Valley in the last academic year.
