YOUNGSTERS from across Teesside learned how they could help in a major emergency as part of the Duke of Cornwall's Community Safety Awards.

Girl Guides, Scouts, Police Cadets and local schools came together with local agencies to be involved in a mock emergency situation near Eaglescliffe at the weekend,.

They took part in the event with police, Cleveland Fire Brigade, the Red Cross and Cleveland Mountain Rescue at the state-of-the art firearms training facility at Urlay Nook.

HRH The Prince of Wales established The Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Awards in 2012 after a visit to Cornwall in 2010 which had been hit by severe flooding.

Temporary Chief Constable and Member of the Local Resilience Forum, Iain Spittal, said: “I’m pleased that we’ve been able to run this event again this year as it provides an invaluable opportunity for young people to learn about how to assist in emergency situations such as severe weather, pandemics or power cuts."
